BYU MUSIC BUILDING

I was part of the team that helped study, conceptualize, design, and build the music building at BYU, which was completed in 2023.

The heart of the building is the vineyard-style concert hall, an expansive yet intimate space in which the audience wraps all the way around the performers. The furthest seat from the stage is only 25 meters, and about 750 of the 1000 seats are within six rows of the performers.

The stage features 19 independently-operable mechanical lifts that can be reconfigured within minutes and can go from full deployment to flat stage in 90 seconds.

The key to the room’s incredible acoustics is the iconic reflector above the stage. The hall’s reverb can be attenuated by dozens of acoustic curtains concealed in the ceiling that can descend into the room to various depths.

The enormous window in the lobby frames the majestic Wasatch Mountains directly to the east during the day and emits a golden glow at night.
